Most employees know they have a UAN. Fewer realise they also have a Member ID, and that they may have several of them.
Your EPF Member ID is the job-specific account number that EPFO assigns to you for each employer. Think of it as the account number for a particular employment, while your UAN is the master identity that ties all those accounts together.
Understanding your Member ID matters more than it seems. If old Member IDs are not linked to your UAN, balances can go untracked for years — and surface only when you try to withdraw or transfer.

You keep one UAN throughout your career but accumulate one Member ID for every employer you work with. EPFO uses both together: the UAN to identify you as an individual, and the Member ID to track contributions under each specific employment.
• Go to the EPFO Passbook Portal and log in using your UAN and password.
• Once logged in, you will see a list of all Member IDs linked to your UAN.
• Click on any Member ID to view the passbook and contribution history for that specific employer.
• Visit the UAN Member Portal and log in with your UAN and password.
• Navigate to View > Service History.
• You will see all Member IDs associated with your UAN, along with employer names and joining and leaving dates.
• Your Member ID is sometimes printed on your monthly salary slip.
• If not, contact your HR or payroll team directly, especially if you are trying to locate an old PF account from a previous employer.

Your Member ID is a combination of letters and numbers that encodes specific information about your employment location and employer. Here is how to read it, using the example: MHBAN00127800000001313

Each Member ID represents a separate PF account from a separate employment. If any of these are not linked to your UAN, the following problems can occur:
• You lose visibility into old PF balances, which continue to sit in dormant accounts.
• You cannot initiate a PF transfer for unlinked Member IDs, which means old balances are not consolidated into your active account.
• EPS service continuity breaks. Years of pension service from previous employers may not be counted toward your 10-year eligibility for a monthly pension.
• When you eventually try to withdraw or claim your full PF balance, unlinked accounts require additional steps that delay the process significantly.
The solution is straightforward: always initiate a PF transfer within your first few months at a new employer. This moves your old balance to your new Member ID under the same UAN and keeps your service record intact.
